Summer Travel is Heating Up

Prep, Trips No Comments

I wanted to give everyone a quick update.

Summer is heating up, and so is our travel schedule.  I hope you enjoyed the five or six live broadcasts we ended up doing last week from San Diego.  It seemed like people really enjoy the beach stuff as well as the LIVE feed while we were inland.  Sorry I didn’t have any edited in video to to put up.  Since it was a solo trip running two cameras at the same time, tends to make me a little crazy.  It’s one of the reasons why we use the LIVE streaming and you should always check it out when ever you get a chance.

During the trip to San Dieo I figured out a way to get clearer shots while walking around and fixed some of the transmission dropouts that we were having.  It hurts a little being on the bleeding edge of technology but we are making huge progress with quality and consistency.

We haven’t been doing a lot from around Chicago since some pretty bad storms have been in and out here lately.  We haven’t got hit like some of the places in Iowa, and the rest of the Midwest.  Hopefully we will all be able to start drying out soon.  We will get some really good stuff from downtown and the lakefront as soon as these weather patterns start to change.

We do have a few trips planned over the next two weeks.  So stay tuned to your computer, if you want to see live broadcast.  I really suggest you sign up for twitter and follow us through that.  Our twitter profile updates every time we start a live broadcast.  Our name on twitter is RoadWarriors.  So when you start using it do a search for us and just hit follow.

As far as the upcoming trips go.

This weekend (June 28 - July 1) we are taking a trip up to the Lake Castle Rock in Wisconsin.    My brothers and I used to fish there with my dad when we were kids.  My dad passed away the day before Christmas Eve last year, and the immediate family is going there to spread his ashes in the lake.   FishingI won’t be broadcasting spreading the ashes since that’s a little personal, and if you ask me kind of morbid.

We will be broadcasting the trip down, camping, and fishing with my brothers on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday (June 28 - July 1).  We are taking the RV and renting a couple boats. You should see some pretty good video as were on the lake and in the campground.  We always have a good time whenever we get together and you will see some very interesting family dynamics going on. We might have some video of the trip prep on Saturday but we will see how that goes and how pressed for time we are.

I will be broadcasting live from the Chicago White Sox game on Wednesday July 2nd.  We will be streaming video from around the park, and even if you’re not a baseball fan.  This is one broadcast you should not miss.

On Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday (July 3 - 7) we will be broadcasting live for the whole weekend from a campground in central Illinois.  We have a ton of activities planned and it should be a blast.

There are a few more things planned for July, and I will let you know about it once we firm up the details. We are watching the gas prices very closely and trying to determine a start date for the Route 66 trip.  As always, things come together at the last moment.  So make sure you subscribe for updates, and don’t miss the chance to ride shotgun for someplace you’d like to see.

Stay tuned for the LIVE video this weekend, and as always thanks for riding shotgun.

Going to California

Prep, Trips, Videos No Comments

I’ve been debating whether or not to broadcast the trip I am about to go on.  I am not taking the RV this time. I have to fly to California for two days.

I asked a couple people that follow Road Warriors Live, and they said sure, why not we would love to see it.  So starting today, I will be broadcasting live on and off for the next three days.

Bookmark this page and don’t forget we still need your vote at www.seero.com/contest.php

This should be some pretty interesting stuff and give you an insight into what I do. You will see how I can afford to be able to drive all over the country and spend this much time with my kids.

I hope you enjoy the video, and don’t forget we still need your vote.

Cheapest Gas Prices Within 5 Miles

Prep, Trips, Uncategorized No Comments

The experts are predicting $7.00 a gallon gas prices here in the states by the end of summer.  I know some countries have been paying this for a while, but from what I see in the international news.  Everybody’s prices are going up at about the same rate.

Cheap_gas_pricesI’m not sure if you guys realize this, but our RV has an 80 gallon tank.  And then to top it off it has a diesel engine.  As you can imagine.  I am always scouring different places online, like gas Buddy and a few of the other websites on where to find the cheapest gas prices.

Well today I ran across cool little app that I can embed right here on the blog.  As long as you know what ZIP code you’re in you can find the cheapest gas prices within 5 miles.

I was just going to use this for myself, but I decided to share it with everyone instead.

All you need to do is Bookmark the Road Warriors  page then come back to it whenever you need to get the cheapest gas price near you.

Check it out now to use the application.

I hope you find it as useful as I do.

By the way.  We could still use your vote at http://www.seero.com/contest.php

We Need Your Vote

Prep, Videos, Winning E-mail 1 Comment

I hate to ask, but we could use a quick favor.

I just found out that we are finalists in a contest for the streaming video service we are using.

If you like what we’ve been doing and would like to see more we could really use a vote in this contest.  The way it looks right now we’re in the running for the top three, but I know you can take us to number one.

So here’s the deal go to www.seero.com/contest.php and vote for RoadWarriors.  I think you will have to create an account, but it only takes a couple seconds and they don’t ask for too much information.  All they want is a username, password and e-mail address.

It will really help us out and let us know that you would like to see more streaming video.

If everything works out as planned.  We should be taking a long trip, with lots of video at the end of the month.  The problem that were running into is that my five-year-old has T-ball until the end of June.  And I have taken a trip to California mid-June.

If it wasn’t for the prior commitments we’d already be on the road and taking advantage of the gas prices while they are still low.  I know, we think that gas prices are high now, but from what I’m hearing the experts are saying that they’re going to be a lot higher by the end of the summer.

As soon as we have something definite for a destination I will post it on the calendar.

Even though we will not be going on an extended trip this month.  Stay tuned for some weekend video streaming from some of the festivals going on in the area.  We might be able to get to something today, depending on the weather from the bluesfest held in downtown Chicago.

In the meantime, if you could go to www.seero.com/contest.php and give us a quick vote, we would really appreciate it.

Stay tuned for video today weather permitting.

Thanks,
Steve

OQO Handheld PC and Software

Prep 1 Comment

If you notice the time of the post from this morning.  You will see it was very early, especially for me.    I was up all night working on installing software on the new handheld PC. even though I liked the new PC since I got it just before the race.  Some of the new software installed has made this little thing just rock.

A got Dragon NaturallySpeaking installed.  Now I can speak directly in the computer without typing text.  This actually works pretty well and saves a ton of typing when doing blog posts.

Between that and my new OQO handheld computer.  My productivity and frequency of doing blog posts should increase dramatically.

These little handheld computers are awesome.  It runs full Windows PCOQO, umpc, hanheld pc software, and since I’ve installed Microsoft Office I can use Outlook for e-mail, and full versions of word, excel, power point.  I can now do my normal business on a PC that fits easily into my pocket.  I was having a problem with the smaller keyboard, but since I owned a Blackberry for years typing with just my thumbs wasn’t such a big adjustment.  Even though I was used to it.  It’s still took time writing longer e-mails or blog posts.

Dragon NaturallySpeaking has tied everything together  It has become a lot easier to pound out some of the longer text documents that I need to do.

This is also the machine.  I am using for live streaming video, while walking around town, attraction, or like last week at the NASCAR race.  If you watched the live feeds on the way to the Coca-Cola 600 you might’ve noticed that the GPS was in and out.  I think the problem has to do with how Microsoft handles Bluetooth and is not necessarily a problem with the computer.  I think we have a solution for that and we’ll be testing out this week.

This was more of a test post than anything else to check the new software.  If you have any questions about the new software or hardware please feel free to leave a comment.

Thanks and stay tuned for more video.

Will Gas Prices Go Higher?

NASCAR, Prep, Trips 2 Comments

I am in the final planning stages of the trip now. Since I will be traveling solo on this trip I am over planning a little on this one. Even though I am looking forward to this trip I am a little nervous. I am surprised on how much I have come to rely on my co-pilot (Jen) on these trips. As I sit here planning I guess I never realized how much she takes care of and I never even have to think about it. So in a very public way I just want to say thanks.

I spent the weekend installing some new electronics in the RV.  It has been on my to do list for almost a year so it’s a huge weight off my shoulders getting it done.

Some of the new stuff that went in are a new Pioneer Avic-d3 stereo/GPS/XM Radio.  This thing does everything except bring you a cup of coffee in the morning and should eliminate a bunch of lighter plug ins in the coach.  It was starting to get really bad and getting rid of all the individual pieces was a necessary.

I was also able to install my HF Radio and CB Radio.  We found out last year that cell phone coverage is pretty good across the country but very spotty in the Rocky mountains and out west.  Being able to call for help in case of an emergency is important to me when traveling with my family.  It also helps keep me awake on the long drives.  I have a Amateur Radio license so it gives me even more people to talk to when the drive gets boring.  After a short test when driving the RV back to storage let me know everything is up and running great.

Last but not least is the Scan Gauge I installed.  This little display hooks directly to your vehicles computer and lets you know what all the gauges are reading.  Another necessity as far as I am concerned.  The big plus for it is that it will tell you what you gas mileage is as you drive down the road.   With the price of gas now over $4.50 a gallon it should pay for itself in one trip.  In just the short trip back to storage I was able to adjust the way I was driving and increase my MPG.  I will show some live shots once we are on the road.  I will also drop in some links to the equipment I installed so you can check it out yourself.

On the way back to storage I went a head and filled up the tank (as much as they would let me).  I figured there will be another price hike just before the weekend so it’s almost like getting it on sale .  My question to everyone is how high do you think the prices will go?  This is really starting to get out of hand.  I heard a news report this morning that the oil companies are making over 2 billion dollars A WEEK in PROFITS.  Now I don’t have a problem with them making money but it really seems like there is some price fixing going on.

Below is a map of the final route I will be taking on this trip.  I you have any suggestions or something I should not miss along the way I am all ears.

I have also posted an article on the Coca Cola 600.  Feel free to rate it and leave your comments.

Stay tuned for more updates.  I will be testing the new tech stuff today and tomorrow so keep a eye on the site for a sneak peek.

NASCAR Coca Cola 600 Trip Prep

NASCAR, Prep 6 Comments

I love it when a plan comes together.  We just got back from San Diego and now it’s time to get ready for the trip.

The plan is starting to come together with just a couple of hiccups.  As it turns out the folks I am suppose to meet at the campground outside the track are going to be coming in on Friday instead of Thursday.  So after a 14 hour drive I get to party by myself on Thursday evening.  Since I have never done a race before I don’t know what to expect.  I am fairly easy going and don’t have a problem with making new friends so I am pretty sure Thursday night will be OK.

That is the only “problem” we have had in planning this trip.  If that’s all that goes wrong I will be very happy.

The tech side is coming along well and like I said before we will be able to transmit LIVE video from the campground on the days leading up to the race.

If you can’t make this race or ever wondered what it would be like camping with a bunch of NASCAR fans this is your chance to check it out.  From what I have seen it can be a ton of fun.

Stay tuned for more updates as things move along over the next week.

Gentlemen Start Your Engines!!!

Gentlemen Start Your Engines

Sorry for the long delay in between postings.  I am sure you thought that we have dropped off the face of the earth or we ditched the RV and went back to work.

I just wanted to check in and let everyone know what is going on.

We have been busy preparing for the summer and getting our trip schedule together.  We are also working out the bugs as far as video and audio transmission on the road.  We have actually taken a couple trips since I last posted but they were for testing equipment and working out some of the kinks that we experienced on the way to and from Florida.

The main website work is still not done since developer we use ran into some problems. We have a very cool trip planned for the end of April and unless they get their work finished we will need to use the back up site again. http://www.roadwarriorslive.com/BackUp since the camera is not live now you might get a 404 error when you try to bring it up.  When the camera is on that site will load just fine for you.

Now that your updated on the tech stuff here is where we are with the trip schedule.

Due to the spiraling cost of gas as well as some new family commitments we have decided push the date of the Route 66 trip until the end of the summer.  We were not expecting Diesel Gas prices to climb to over $4.50 a gallon and with an 80 Gallon tank it gets cost prohibitive pretty quickly.  We will still be making the trip but have decided to combine it with other business.  Instead of making 2 or 3 cross country trips this summer we are cutting it down to just one at the end of Summer.  We will be taking our time getting there and back so it works out better for you while riding shotgun.

Instead of taking the Cross Country trips we have decided to stay a little closer to home base and take frequent trips within a one day drive.  This should also work out better for everyone since you will not be staring at the road all the time but also enjoying some cool vacation spots in the Midwest.

Since some of you are not in the Midwest I know you might think of unsubscribing now but I have something for you too.  I have invited a few friends to also post here on their travels.  This way we can all get a little taste of different places to go and things to do and you don’t have to wait on us to get there.  Keep an eye out for those posts.  Comments on those posts also qualify you for our souvenir give-a-ways.

That brings me to more exciting news we have to share with you.  On Memorial Day weekend we will be testing out some new technology that will let you come along not just for the ride but when we are out and about.  We will be testing a way to get you LIVE VIDEO when we are out of the RV and exploring. Will will still be hooked to the GPS so you will be able to see where we are.

Next Trip
I have been invited to the NASCAR Race at Lowes Motor Speedway on Memorial Day weekend.  This will be a solo trip and I will be taking the RV.  The plan is to get on the road early Thursday morning and get there and setup before dark.  It’s a 700+ mile trip so I will need you to keep me awake.  I will be transmitting video the GPS will be running.

Once I am setup and if everything works out as planned you will be able to see the party at the campground on Thurs, Fri, Sat, Sun, & Mon.  From what I understand things can get a little crazy so you will want to tune in and see what trouble we get into.

Mark your calendar for the trip: May 22 2008 I should be starting around 3:00 or 4:00 in the morning and driving all day.  Then also set a reminder for yourself to check-in the whole weekend and he drive back on Monday.

Stay tuned for updates as we get closer.  I can’t wait to get back on the road again.
Steve

P. S.  We will be giving out Souvenirs so start commenting now to get in the running.

Beautiful Drive to Tallahassee

Disney World, Prep, Trips No Comments

If you were watching as we left Nashville this morning you would have seen the rain continued from the drive the day before.  Sorry I missed a post last night but after diving in the NASTY wind and rain all day I had to get a couple things taken care of with the RV. The rain has stopped us from doing a Live show so the Route 66 commercial has been playing.  We should be able to get a Live Show done on Wed or Thurs.

It was really bad on the way to Nashville.  You might have seen the 3 crashes in the median on the way.   Crash might be the wrong term to use here since one of them was just someone who had spun out on the Interstate and ended up in the median.  If that has ever happened to you would be scared enough to warrant calling it a crash.

We also had a little mishap with the RV as the wind caught the door on one of our stops and slammed it against the side.  It punched a hole in the door so we will  need to fix that once we get to Florida.  Not a big deal but it still hurts to see it.

We hung out for a little while longer in Nashville than planned this morning to let all the storms pass completely.  After a little rain on the start things cleared up in the afternoon.  We took the long route through Alabama to miss all the storms going through Georgia.  Turned out to be a blessing in disguise since a shortcut we took through Alabama took us down and older 4 lane highway and through about 6-7 small towns.  The weather was perfect and we got off the interstate and onto some back roads for a while.  It was a great prelude for the Route 66 trip this summer.  Most of the roads we will be on will be like this or smaller.

There is allot to be said for getting off the interstate and going through some small towns.  I never knew how pretty Alabama was.  I have been through it a couple times but never like today.  If you ever get a chance to come down this way I highly recommend it.  You can even stop at one of the dozens of Flea Markets and get a deal.

Sorry about the new website being as weird as it is for the video.  Our developers are still working hard on getting it done.  For now I have put back up the old site.  I got hundreds of text messages today asking about why certain things did not work or when you tried to move the camera the video just turned blue.  They are working on all this in the meantime I put back up the site I hand coded myself.  It was never meant to be PRETTY.  It was the original code for testing. Best thing I can say about it is “it works”.  This was suppose to be a test run and we did not think there would be this many visitors so soon.  We are not complaining about the visits. In fact, we are happy people are enjoying it this much.  Keep telling everyone you know!

I just personally hate going to a site that does not work.  I apologize for the way the old site looks but having something that will work is more important than the look right now.  Glad we are doing this test and it was not an official launch!

Tomorrow is the last leg for the trip down. We will be leaving early in the morning for Fort Meyrs, FL.  Should be about a 8 or 9 hour drive and the weather is suppose to be clear.  We will be shooting some video and getting a live show together down there so stay tuned for more info.  After Fort Meyers we will be off to the Home of the Mouse ( Walt Disney World ).  We will also be doing a live show from there.

If you have an questions and don’t have our text message ID feel free to post a comment here.  You can still qualify for one of this trips souvenir giveaways by posting comments.

Thanks for riding shotgun on the trip down.  Should be a great couple weeks in Sunny Florida.

Trip To Walt Disney World Planned

Disney World, Prep 3 Comments

It’s late and I am tired as I write this so excuse any typos.

We finally have some firm dates on the shakedown trip!!!!

The way it looks right now we will be packing up and hitting the road on the 3rd of March. There is a bunch to do between now and then so Feb will be a busy month.

Since the Beast has been in storage for the winter we will start packing it the night before and get on the road early the next morning.

We just had 12 inches of snow tonight and I REALLY hope it’s gone before then.  I know it sounds a little crazy but the idea of driving a 22,000 lbs sled is not my idea of a good time.  I leave the driving like that to Santa.

I will keep you updated along the way so you can get a feel for everything involved.

We thought we would start with this trip since it’s one almost every family makes or wants to make at some point.  Plus since it’s before Spring Break it could be useful to some folks that already have plans.

We are looking for suggestions on where to stop and what to do along the way.  Since you are riding shotgun you have input here too.  We really want everyone to be involved and have their say.  So let’s get this thing started.  All you need to do is post a comment to get the discussion going.

The first trip will be…..

Chicago to Fort Myers Florida
and then onto
Fort Wilderness at Walt Disney World

  * Where should we stop?

  * Who should we interview along the way?

  * Is there anything you would like to see?

  * If you have made this trip before what should we MAKE SURE we do.

Help us plan the shakedown trip and then watch as it unfolds from the comfort of your living room or office.

We will be “On the Road” for 2 weeks then we have to get back to Chicago and meet with the Travel Channel.

We are really glad you decided to join us, and can’t wait to get the adventure started. Don’t forget to tell your friends.  The more the merrier when it comes to a Road Trip.  Don’t worry there is more than enough room.

FYI - This is familar territority for both Jen and I.  We have made this trip at least a dozen times.  We both lived in Florida in fact that’s where we met.  Last but not least I worked at Walt Disney World for a couple years and know some secrets I would love to share with you.
